Our adventures got underway quickly. The first morning we (Hannah and I) spent in Fleet included a scrumptious English breakfast (of course, with fresh milk off the door step) and a trip to Fleet high street. While Simon attended to some optometry business Hannah and I explored the streets and open buildings. I found it surprisingly difficult to navigate the streets, not because there was an overwhelming amount of traffic and not because I couldn’t read the signs, but rather because of the unnatural flow of traffic.
The kick off to my next adventure this fall started off with a lovely five day visit to my good friend Simon Treacy in Fleet, Hampshire, UK. I met Simon in Granada via a mutual friend’s birthday party last March and our friendship continuously grew from there. We shared many experiences in Spain together but perhaps one of the most entertaining aspects of our relationship is our perspectives of one another’s lifestyle, language, and culture. I had never really known a true “Brit” and so my knowledge of the United Kingdom was very limited. Furthermore we found ourselves to get on quite well and our routine exchange of banter was something to which I looked forward everyday.
One of the most rewarding aspects of gaining an international friend is the chance to go visit him/her. My good Spanish friend, Hannah, and I were very fortunate to be offered to stay at the Treacy residence for several days while Simon showed us what he knew about the London area. So this summer I was home in Maryville, MO looking to make some cash. Every other summer I had spent in Maryville prior I had always been employed at the aquatic center as a lifeguard and swim team coach. Having arrived late this summer I was unable to re-employ myself there which in turn forced me to search for a new job.
I applied to a variety of locations around town and luckily I was hired as a server at A&G restaurant. A&G’s is a local bar and grill that has a diverse cuisine ranging from steaks and seafood to fancy salads. The owner immigrated to the U.S. from Greece decades ago and opened up his own restaurant so there is also a “Greek menu” that is offered every Friday night. Read the rest of this entry »
